A 32-year-old migrant worker was killed on Wednesday (June 22, 2022) at a worksite in Singapore after he was crushed between parts of a mobile crane. This marks the total workplace fatalities to 27 so far this half a year alone.

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) further explained that an accident occurred when the worker was retrieving two shackles from a toolbox underneath the chassis of a mobile crane, then the crane turned clockwise and his chest was crushed between the crane counterweights and the crane undercarriage.

After the incident, the worker was taken unconscious to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital but died from his injuries. Police investigations are still ongoing and all lifting works on the worksite have been stopped temporarily until further notice.

Since the economy has reopened and more activities are returning to normal, the accident rates are going up. The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) stated that starting from June 14, companies with poor workplace safety and health performance would face harsher penalties.

What can we learn:

  • The construction manager must do a proper briefing on safety for all personnel on the worksite.
  • Physical barricades and warning signs should be put up when cranes are in operation, and all personnel should stay clear from such a dangerous area.
  • All construction workers must have a safety knowledge and proper training on the worksite.
