Explosion Proof Products
What is Explosion-Proof?
Explosion-proof refers to equipment specifically designed to operate safely in hazardous environments. To meet explosion-proof standards, an enclosure must be capable of containing any internal explosion and preventing sparks or flames from igniting flammable gases, vapors, dust, or fibers in the surrounding atmosphere. This does not mean the device can withstand an external explosion. Instead, it refers to the enclosure’s ability to prevent an internal spark from triggering a much larger blast.
What Are Hazardous Zone 1 and Zone 2 Areas?
These are areas where explosive gas atmospheres may be present, with the difference between Zone 1 and Zone 2 defined by the likelihood and duration of exposure. In Zone 1, explosive gases are likely to be present during normal operations. In Zone 2, such gases are not likely to occur under normal conditions, and if they do, their presence is temporary and infrequent.
The classifications are defined by the IEC 60079-10-1 standard, which outlines 3 hazardous zones in total. In addition to Zones 1 and 2, there is Zone 0, where explosive gas atmospheres are continuously present, present for long periods, or frequently occur.
